Judge Martha Chizuma
Chairperson, Ombudsman Malawi

It's not news anymore as the Pandemic of Corona Virus continue killing people across the globe.

The International organizations and other individuals have fight hard in contributing their funds towards fighting the pandemic since December, 2019 when the first case was reported in Wuhan, China.

In Malawi, some funds were also received and distributed accordingly to all necessary departments. Some funds were meant to purchase Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs).

Few times later, there were issues where 6.2 Billion Kwacha (equivalent of $9.5 Millions) was not used in accordance with the intended purposes.

The issue was reported to Independent Body called Ombudsman, whose Chairperson is Mrs Martha Chizuma a Judge in Supreme Court.

In her decision, after hearing from all sides, she ordered that the Malawi government through the Presidential Task Force on Convid-19 issues should be submitting reports on how the funds related to Convid-19 are spent.

In her order, the reports were to come from all angles where the funds were coming from. For example Funds from International organizations, Government Individuals and even local companies. All the funds that were released with the purpose of fighting the pandemic.

This has shocked the Malawi Nationals as the government through the body taking care of Covid-19 issues failed to submit the reports now over 6 months have gone.

Currently, Judge Chizuma has not spoken on what next action shall be taken after the government has failed to account for the Covid-19 funds.

In other reports, it was said that the 70% of the funds were spent on personal allowances and 21% for making purchases and the remaining percentage missing on how it was used.

Most local Human rights groups have critisized the Current government that it has failed Malawians in less than a year.

Sylvester Namiwa one of the Civil Society Leaders asked the government to provide necessary reports failing which he will organize countrywide demostrations.

So far, no International Community have commented on the matter.
